The first dance | Behind the image

The second blog in my “behind the image” series. I’m writing these blogs to hopefully show you that each and every image means more to me than simply a picture.

The quote “a picture is worth a thousand words”, rings true.

As a photographer, you are capturing a one-off moment in time. Hopefully, preserving it in time for life.

A first dance is always a momentous occasion in any wedding. It signals the start of the evening’s festivities. This particular image captured at Crathorne Hall meant a lot to me. I had been in hospital for two weeks before and had to sweet talk the nurses to let me out to capture the wedding. Although a lot of guests had told the bride I looked ill, I was, and I did struggle. What can I say I love weddings!

I chose this image to showcase because even though the dance floor is full of people, the bride and groom are framed centre to the image, the lady on the right with her back to me and the Gentlemen in the light blue shirt draw your eye directly to the bride and groom. Who are framed by everyone else on the dance floor.

The expression on the bride’s face is one of elation and almost in a trance with the music that’s playing. The groom's head is raised and is clearly in a similar state looking at his beautiful bride. The elation of the release of nerves now that most of the day is complete. It's time to relax and enjoy the rest of their day.

I took it with a slight slant to the frame, this enabled me to allow the image to flow across the dance floor and added a slight contemporary feel to the image. Like most documentary wedding images, it’s a fast in the moment picture, never to be caught again or recreated.
