You might have seen I have a passion for black and white photography, it captures detail, contrast and offers stupid amounts of clarity. These are things I love to portray in my images, whether it be a family portrait or documenting the story of a wedding day. I see Black and white, unlike the almost fake vintage look Photoshop automated action you see everywhere at the moment, as been timeless. No matter if it is 100 years or captured yesterday Black and white photography is simplistic and elegant. It lends itself to a variety of situations and admittedly it doesn't always work, for example if I have a bride that is sat in a colourful garden, it would be meaningless to have the image black and white, you would loose the feel and the depth of the image. But when I do get chance to shoot Black and white, its not just an "effect" ~ I shoot all my Portraits and weddings using a file format known as RAW, this way the images I capture are pure with minimal processing done by my camera and in the biggest file format I can. This way when I get back to the studio I have the opportunity to "develop" the image manually using Photoshop. and as mentioned before with my Black and white photography, I NEVER use pre sets , actions or any automating, I process each image individually to make sure each and every image that I produce is exactly what I have in mind. Using this process, although might be time consuming, but it gives me chance to adjust contrast, highlights, shadows, clarity, detail of each image rather than simply pressing a button and Photoshop simply applying an effect. Call it a digital darkroom if you may. I make reference to my early years in photography when I accompanied my father to our darkroom in the loft (see the about page), well these day unlike then, I sit in front of a calibrated PC and Photoshop is my darkroom.
